Nick Martinez is a young Midtempo artist from Ventura, CA. who recently relocated to San Diego, CA. to further explore his abilities within the bass music scene, hoping to one day play at a local San Diego nightclub, Bassmnt. Nick currently produces Midtempo music with heavy industrial sound that sets a warehouse scene in your mind. He strives to be unique and independent in all that he does, always showing his individuality and creative touch in his songs and sets.
He first became interested in creating dance music in 2013, shortly after his first show, which sparked an insatiable thirst for his creative outlet. He later became introduced to music production in 2015, when a friend in college had a “crappy” old Pioneer mixer and let him experiment with it. He remains a self-taught artist, learning much of his skills online through YouTube, as well as from friendships with other DJs/producers. Nick first began by making House music, highly influenced by some of the pioneering Big Room House artists of the years before, such as; Avicii, Swedish House Mafia, Martin Garrix, and more. Over time and exposure to new genres, Nick became inspired by different artists rising in the dance music scene, such as Jauz, Rezz, and Gesaffalstein, soon learning to create a more bass-centered sound, and thereafter identifying as a Midtempo artist. Nick shared that one of his favorite ways to start a Midtempo song is to think of his inspirations and the personal sound that he likes to create, usually starting over 4 kicks and 100 bpm.
Nick’s priorities in terms of his music are currently to remain versatile and functional with his music, before making an attempt at getting signed. Rather than focus on getting signed or playing shows to get his name known in the industry, Nick has been prioritizing creating a genuine and long-term fanbase online, through his previous livestreams (Nick & Friends) and releases (such as “One Way” and “Insanity”), and continues to push toward functionality, versatility, and self-sufficiency to build up his portfolio.
Nick’s newest venture is signing his new release “A New Order” to a new music label, Rezonate Records (previously known as Solstice Events). Nick shared with us that he met the founders of Rezonate Records through winning a spotlight contest that they had, to play their livestream, “Winter Covers Everything”. Nick looks forward to his ongoing working relationship with this fresh new music label, deeply appreciating the freedom and support that they as a label give to an artist. He hopes for a long-term relationship, due to having the creative freedom he desires, and prefers to maintain a flexible relationship, versus working with a music label that might take more ownership and control over his songs.
So what can we expect next?
Nick’s newest release “A New Order” dropped on April 8th with Rezonate Records!
You can listen here now!
His new tune brings you the industrial sounds of Midtempo, creating a pulsating rhythm perfect for dancing to all night in a warehouse. The intro sets the mood for the rest of the track, leading into a nice arpeggio that lays down the foundation, creating a rhythm that builds and intensifies the longer you listen. It’s a song that’s not hard to love, with a consistent flow and steady foundation leading up to a good payoff with the second drop.
Nick hopes to continue exploring Midtempo with the creative freedom to grow his fanbase while having more genuine engagements, livestreams, upcoming collaborations (within the next 3 months), and doubling down on releases before trying to get his foot in the door of some great bass venues in San Diego. Keep your eyes open for Nick Martinez, he might just show up on a Bassmnt lineup in the near future!
